Ben Lowe’s latest collection, Crying the Unknown, is named after a poem written by Madge Hales and published in her 1955 book Dark Landscape. Catching sight of a dusty, tattered first edition of this book at a London market, Lowe was initially intrigued by the title, which echoes the brooding, abstract landscapes that abound in his own work. Over subsequent months he kept Hales’ book by his side and often delved into her poems during those strange, somnolent slices of time – familiar to any new parent – that punctuated his life following the birth of a son.

Ben's been selected from thousands of applicants to be part of a new 4 part documentary on contemporary art. The final Six artists will work alongside one another over Eight weeks to create various art projects and, ultimately exhibit their work in the Saatchi gallery, London.

'In fact, School of Saatchi (BBC2) appears to be a sort of rescue mission, a genuine attempt to separate wheat from chaff, to weed out the chancers and leave the viewer with a real sense of why something modern might be worthy of being considered art. The four judges are Tracey Emin, Kate Bush (not that one, the curator one), critic Matthew Collings and collector Frank Cohen, here described as "the Saatchi of the north", although there is something quite un-Saatchi-like about his availability. The famously reclusive Charles Saatchi does not actually appear in the programme, even though it bears his name and it will ultimately be him who decides which artist is awarded with an exhibition at the Hermitage in St Petersburg....'
